TSUGA canadensis

'Eastern Hemlock'. A large tree, often with several main stems from near the base. The best species for limey soil. Leaves to 15mm long, marked with 2 whitish bands beneath. Cones ovoid, slender stalked, 1.5-2.5cm long. It has given rise to innumerable cultivars, many of them suitable for a rock garden or stone trough. It differs form the closely related T. heterophylla in its usually forked trunk and its leaves which are more tapered to the apex and not so noticeably banded beneath.
